Dr. Mark Sobel is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in foot and ankle. He has maintained a Solo Private Practice in New York City and Monmouth County New Jersey for over 25 years. Dr. Sobel grew up in Matawan, N.J. where he was inducted to the Matawan Regional High School (MRHS) Hall of Fame 1996. He also served as the team physician at MRHS from 1995-2003. After high school Dr. Sobel attended the University of Maryland (UMD) where he walked onto the varsity football team while maintaining honors. He received the George C. Cook Memorial Award for the senior football player with the highest GPA and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK). He was an honorary captain at the Maryland vs. Clemson football game in 2011. The UMD Alumni Association presented Dr. Sobel with the Alumni Achievement Award at the “Maryland in Manhattan” event (2016). In 2016, Dr. & Mrs. Sobel established, The Mark Sobel, Jr. Memorial Scholarship at UMD which is awarded annually to two pre-med undergraduate students of the sciences. www.launch.umd.edu/sobel. Dr. Sobel serves on the Board of Visitors of the UMD College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences.
He attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio where he began his research of the peroneal tendons which culminated in the publication of his textbook entitled: The Peroneal Tendons – A Clinical Guide to Evaluation and Management. While at CWRU he received the Rawlings Memorial Scholarship in 1985 and 1987. He received the Paul H. Curtis Award for his paper entitled “The Multiple Etiologies of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” in 1985.
Dr. Sobel then completed an Internship in General Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, NYC (1988).
Dr. Sobel completed his Orthopaedic Residency at The Hospital For Special Surgery NYC (1992) where he published and presented research.
He completed a post-residency fellowship in orthopaedic foot and ankle reconstruction with Roger A Mann, M.D. in Oakland, California (1992), and an AO Scholarship in Trauma of the foot and ankle at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington with Sigvard T. Hansen, Jr., M.D., Stephen K. Benirschke, M.D., (1993), Bruce J. Sangeorzan, M.D.
Dr. Sobel is committed to continuation of medical education. He still loves to find ways to restore his patients’ function following a foot/ankle or any orthopaedic injury. He often tries a variety of conservative (non-operative) measures, including exercise programs, medications, bracing and activity modification to arrive at a resolution of the clinical problem. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
